What makes us special?
Bigger is not always better. We are a purposely small team of highly skilled stone carvers specialising in the making of fine headstones and relief carving. Lead by Fergus Wessel, we have many repeat clients and we are proud to have an established international reputation for reliability and fine quality of workmanship. We are quiet, gentle, and approachable; we all have our different strengths and together form a solid and talented team.
We are proud to have been chosen as one of three finalists in the Heritage Crafts Association Maker of the Year Award 2022.
MEET THE FOUNDER
Fergus Wessel is an incredibly experienced letter carver. He set up Stoneletters nearly twenty years ago and has trained several apprentices. Clients, however, especially value his warmth, his compassionate approach, and his attention to detail.
Every member of our team strives for perfection, combining traditional techniques and tools with a fresh and open approach.

I know of no building from the prestigious Oxford College to the modest cottage that could not be improved by the addition of Fergus Wessel’s skill, attention and sensibility. He is in the great tradition of English stone cutters, stretching back to Eric Gill. As an architect, I have been privileged to have his contribution to a number of my buildings, and I regard him as one of the finest stone cutters in the country.
Stoneletters in May 2015 completed a large headstone for Guy & Lettie Benson in Stanway Churchyard, with Cumberland slate inset into Cotswold (Guiting) Stone, beautiful lettering and a carved scallop. The work was very well done.
