×Rhodes house inscription carved in-situ in African |xam language.
I was honoured to be asked to carve a unique and special inscription on the lower parapet of Rhodes House this year.
A response to the legacy of the imperialist and mining magnate Cecil John Rhodes the inscription was to be carved into the fabric of the refurbished Rhodes House at the University of Oxford in the UK.
A statement “remembering and honouring the labour and suffering of those who worked to create this wealth” has been translated into the southern African language ǀxam and carved into the stone parapet of a new convention centre within the building.
We chose a very clean typeface for this inscription because some of the letters are quite complex and we didn't want to distract from the unique language itself. The whole inscription was carved in-situ over the period of two weeks. We battled the freezing January temperatures but needed to wait for dry weather.
The English translation was carved in the workshop and set into the paving in the ground. Our cat found the stone interesting!
